About Me

Hi! I'm new to the site, but have had pen pals and done other sorts of swaps (less organized than this!) in the past. I have times when life keeps me too busy for swapping/writing, however, I will always try to fulfill anything that I take on. I'm married for 33 years to a wonderful man who really calms my crazy side and brings out the best in me. I have 2 adult daughters, both with special needs - but who cope very well and make us quite proud. (They are not mine by birth, but that is complicated.) I'm the mom to 2 lizards (leopard geckos) and a bunch of cats. (I say a bunch because everyone in the house has their own cat(s), but I only, technically have one - Sir Percival. However, I still get to be the mommy to them all.) We had one dog in our life, a labrador/bull mix who was the sweetest, most gentle dog in the world, but we had to put her down several years ago and we aren't certain when we will have another refugee to take in. (All of our furry babies come to us as strays or injured, or in need of a home due to someone who must give them up.) I'm a customer service rep in a printing and mailing shop run by a non-profit for the disabled. It is great working with a charity while putting my business skills to use. (I have been in the printing and mailing industry for about 20 years.) So, shameless plug, if you need anything in that vein... wink I've worked in a dozen different fields, but I'm an artist at heart. I do just about every art/craft under the sun. (When I can.) I'm an avid reader/learner. I have taught myself most everything since leaving school (and a lot of what I learned in school was through my own effort, not in the curriculum) and I love to learn/experience new things. I love to cook and bake, garden, stalk thrift shops/estate sales, etc., camp and hike, walk the beach, sit around a campfire and talk with friends, watch bad movies, read good books, snuggle under a pile of blankets on a cold night, listen to the rain and thunder, and the list goes on and on... I'm bisexual, but happy in my marriage; I'm LBGT friendly and poly involved. I have strong opinions, consider myself a feminist, am traditional in many things, but open-minded about most others. I have friends from 16 to 90, and love to talk with people of differing cultures, ages and opinions. My dream is to homestead with a few chickens, a goat, a beehive and a BIG veggie garden. I've always been very "green" and have a great respect for all living things... except rats/fleas/roaches/mosquitos... I don't know why we have them, but they were a mistake. ;-) I'm verbally hyper, and I love to write. I'm a poet and idealist at heart, but pragmatic and practical on a day to day basis. I'm a dreamer, a lover, the kind of friend you'd like to have when TSHTF... And I NEVER know what to say in these stupid things so I'll stop there before I drive you crazy!

Favorite Music

Bloody near everything! I love music! I sing and play woodwind instruments. I'm trying to teach myself the Appalachian Dulcimer. I know just enough keyboards to plunk out a tune, but my left hand (and yes, I'm a lefty) is just stupid. (Don't ask my how I can play woodwinds that require 2 hands, but when I plunk my left hand down on a keyboard it just lays there looking stupid!)

I love rock & roll! I like old fashioned country and bluegrass. I'm fond of classical and folk music. I'm down with soul/blues/jazz/r&b. I like music from other cultures. I love "oldies", beach/surf music, musicals... I'll listen to anything that is not offensive or just plain BAD. I like SOME rap, but mostly avoid the genre due to the "gangsta" attitude and glorification of violence. (Same goes for any violent rock.)

Some favorite groups are: Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues, The Beatles, The Who, Linkin Park, Seether, Joan Jett, AC/DC, Metallica, Tom Petty, Alabama, Charlie Daniels, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Creedence Clearwater Revival, America, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Don Henley, Dan Fogelberg, Huey Lewis, Billy Idol, Gordon Lightfoot, Al Hirt, Boots Randolph, Herb Alpert, Cat Stevens, Jerry Rafferty, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Pachbel, Vivaldi, Wagner, Ottmar Liebert, Psi, Himekami, Wintergaten, The Scorpions, Poison, Guns & Roses, Rammstein, Nirvana, Fallout Boy, Daler Mehndi, Kay Starr, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Dionne Warwick, Johnny Cash, Steve Miller Band, Electric Light Orchestra, Blue Oyster Cult, Marty Robbins, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Bill Monroe, Alison Krauss, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, David Bowie, Macklemore, Dean Martin, Nate King Cole, Johnny Mathis, Burl Ives, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, Van Halen, Jim Nabors, Santana, Cher, and the list goes on and on and on...

Favorite Books

OMG! So....many! Up The Down Staircase, Night, The Hiding Place, Almost anything by Stephen King. Most true crime books. Histories of all sorts. Science fiction and fantasy of all sorts. The Screwtape Letters, Political philosophy such as The Republic, Common Sense, On Liberty, The Social Contract, etc. Non-fiction of dozens of types. Lots based on nature and science. Poetry. Almost any poetry except BAD poetry. Particularly fond of Rudyard Kipling. All of the Nehwon series by Fritz Lieber, On The Beach, Alas Babylon, The Stand, Ancestor Stones, Virtually anything Shakespeare. The Dragon Rider/Pern Series by Anne McCaffery. The "Myth" series by Robert Aspirin. Short fiction - it is an art all of its own! The Elric Saga by Michael Moorcock. The Seamstress and the Little Red Shoes. ALL of the colored "Fairy" books... The Blue Fairy Book, The Yellow Fairy book, etc. Almost ANY mythology/fables. Everything Edgar Alan Poe. Nearly anything horror/suspense/mystery. I love books. That's about it in a nutshell. I hate romances. (Except gothic romances like Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights.) I'm not fond of the "best seller" type books. Love zombies and post-apocalypse novels. Virtually anything nautical or lighthouse related.

Favorite Movies

Aliens, Die Hard, The Sound of Music, The Wizard of Oz, The Greatest Showman, Paint Your Wagon, Almost any musical. Westerns. WWII films. Comedies in general, although not goofball, stupid ones. Space Balls, All of the original Star Wars. The Fugitive, U.S. Marshalls, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Day of the Triffids, The Postman, Young Frankenstein, The Kingsman, Firestarter, Carrie, All of the Mad Max movies. World Gone Wild, Night of the Comet, Anything Star Trek. (Including the reboots.) The Man in the Iron Mask, The Three Musketeers, Beetlejuice, Batman Movies. The Island at the Top of the World, The Land That Time Forgot, The old Sinbad movies. Clash of the Titans. Anything claymation or marionation. Pirate movies. All of the Chronicles of Riddick series. BAD old, SF & Horror movies.

I'm a movie fan. Love animated movies, and have a wide range of likes. Never really got into "chick flicks."

Favorite Television

BRITISH COMEDIES! Especially Red Dwarf Old Dr. Who. Star Trek, Star Trek TNG, Star Trek Deep Space Nine, Old black & white comedy series. Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, My Favorite Martian, The Partridge Family, The Land of the Lost, Mr. Ed, Good Times, All in the Family, Gomer Pyle, MASH, The Dick Van Dyke Show, a LOT of old "classic" TV. Stranger Things, Lost in Space (old and new) Last Resort, OLD Christmas/holiday specials by Rankin & Bass. How It's Made, But, other than old stuff, I really don't like much TV.

Favorite Crafts

Stained glass, Lampworked glass, Fused glass, Beading/jewelry making, Pottery/ceramics, Painting, Sketching, Cross Stitch and designing cross stitch, Nature Crafts, Photography, Outsider/found object art. Almost anything artsy with my hands except I never picked up crochet/knitting and I don't like most "junky" easy crafts.

Comment: Thanks for this beautiful punched ornament. One year, at the Cranberry Festival, in Warrens, Wisconsin, the big rage was to take tin paint cans, pierce designs and landscapes on their tops and sides, put candles in them and use them as luminaries. I could never figure out what they used to keep them from denting as they pierced the curved sides. Merry Christmas! Hugs from Alaska, Sherry
Response: Try filling the can with water and freezing it. I've heard that's how to keep the curved pieces from deforming. The craft comes from Europe several hundred years ago. Mine was with a throwaway lid, but most of the actual lanterns used to be made from sheet tin and soldered together after the parts were punched and shaped. I simply did my hammering with the lid held firmly to a block of wood. I want to try a lantern, though. I just don't have the time right now. I hope it looks great on your tree!

Hi there! You're a fan of British comedies, have you watched Are You Being Served? It is my all time favorite! I laugh myself silly each time I watch the episodes. :)
