About Me

I won't be signing up for more swaps in April so I can focus on finishing hand quilting the quilt i'm working on. My goal is to start binding it by May so I have some stitchin' to catch up on!

I will also be doing a small bit of traveling in May and will have people in from out of town so I won't be signing up for many swaps or hosting many in May so I can focus on spending time with family.

I will still be reachable via the SB messenger system if needed! :)

Hello hello Everyone!

My name is Megan and I live in the lovely & historic Boston, MA. I am a full-time Research Fellow at Harvard University and work with functional apparel design and soft robotics.

Want to see some examples of what I do at work?

Bill Meets Bots

See Bill Gates try on a glove I made! Also, check out the lab I work in!

Soft Robotic Glove

Check out the glove and shoulder projects I work on!

I grew up, went to school, and had lived my entire life in Minnesota before moving and still hold rural Minnesota in my heart.

I identify as non-binary, and I use they/them/their pronouns! I have a marvelous girlfriend with an adorable long-haired cat.

As my favorite saying goes: I'm not "gay" as in happy, i'm queer as in "fuck you!".

I see some people asking not to send "Politicized Rainbows". I have no idea what they could possibly be referring to so I say boo! to that, send me those politicized rainbows for my queer little body to revel in! Just another Liberal, Queer, Feminist killjoy. ;)

As for the cat, Radish - she is "free roam". I do my best to keep her out of my crafting supplies and away from projects, but I can't guarantee that any swaps I send will be completely free from dander/a random stray hair. If you are extremely allergic to cats please let me know and we can work something out!

I tend to keep pretty busy between work, art projects, baking, and gaming. I am a fairly relaxed and easy-going person striving to make the world a little brighter. I like to bring enthusiasm, positivity, and wonder to everyday life. Intersectional Feminism, Queer activism, and social justice are important to me and I hope to address them more in my art, work, and life.

I'm happy to chat with people in a respectful manner if they have questions related to LGBTQ matters. :)

Below is a picture from my senior design project from undergrad! My line was inspired by birds and I made every outfit with my own two hands. I even hand dyed the shirt panels! :)

Likes, Dislikes, and Wish List

I love sending out and receiving things here on Swap-Bot, but I believe it shouldn't be super stressful to those swapping with me. Below is a list of items I like/dislike so you can get a good feel of me & my interests.

Please don't send extras unless the swap requires it or is related to my profile likes.

I'm trying to be more deliberate about material things in my life this year. Do I have use for this item? Does it serve me well? Does it make me happy?

I want less clutter in my life, so thank you for not sending unrelated extras! I rate on the quality and thoughtfulness of the swap, not the extra elements included within. :)

I prefer postcards to be sent naked unless specified in the swap guidelines! I love getting fun postcards, and while I don't mind touristy ones I really love receiving the following:

  • Fine Art & Museum prints (Esp. Gustav Klimt, Hieronymus Bosch, Francisco Goya, M.C. Esher, Alphonse Mucha, Van Gogh, and Charlie Harper - especially his birds!)

  • Art Deco, Retro Futurism, Art Nouveau

  • Fashion Prints, especially: Alexander McQueen, Paul Poiret, Charles James, Erte (Romain de Tirtoff), Issey Miyake

  • Historical Places & Events from your local area

  • Kieth Haring
  • Frida Kahlo
  • Robert Mapplethorpe
  • Georgia O'Keeffe
  • David Wojnarowicz
  • Artemisia Gentileschi
  • Charlie Harper
  • Yayoi Kusama
  • M C Esher
  • Edmonia Lewis
  • Hieronymus Bosch
  • (This section is a work in progress!)

Nudity is totally fine by me be it photography, paintings, fine art related, etc., I don't enjoy graphic violence against women though.

For tea I prefer:

  • Fruity teas are my absolute favorite!

  • Herbal teas/infusions

  • Flavored black & green teas, preferably not "plain"

  • "Woodsy"/"Smokey" teas (especially spruce/evergreen teas)

  • Surprise me, I love trying new things!

Hot Chocolate:

  • I LOVE malty hot chocolates and spicy hot chocolates

  • Please no mint-chocolate or white chocolate flavors, thank you!

  • Not a huge fan of "swiss miss" type hot chocolates, i'm happy to swap "fancy" ones with people if interested!

I enjoy:

  • Meat based jerky
  • Vegan jerky
  • Sour candies!
  • Gummy candies (especially sour ones)
  • Savory packaged snacks
  • Hazelnuts & hazelnut flavored candies/chocolate/food
  • Chocolates - dark or milk, no white (blech!)
  • Hot sauce
  • Local honey
  • Raw oysters (but please don't send them ;) )
  • Whole, un-ground spices (send me a PM before sending those)
  • Whole bean coffee (no instant, no pre-ground, no cups/pods)
  • Interesting non-perishable snacks from your country/locality!
  • I love gin and gin cocktails so if you have a recipe you like send it along!
  • You can't send them, but I love craft beer, wine, and spirits! So if you know of any fun breweries to visit someday, wines to look for, and cocktail recipes I am all ears!

  • Also, I love trying new recipes! If you have a favorite (without tomatoes, sorry!) send it along be it printed out, written on a scrap of paper, or on a recipe card (my holder can accommodate cards up to 4x6 inches).

The only food I don't really care for is tomatoes. I don't like them raw or cooked, even in sauces. So no tomato sauces, pizza, salads, hotdishes/casseroles, etc. I'm a weirdo, I know!

If you are my partner in a recipe swap you can still send me dishes with tomatoes (unless the swap is profile specific) and I’ll rate a 5 (and maybe even a heart!). Don’t fear sending recipes with tomatoes to me, I have some sneaky ways I can adapt them or I’ll pass them along! :)

I'm an avid cook and baker, I love trying new things in the kitchen! I've dabbled in everything from bread baking, pastry making, candy making, cheese making, canning, pickling, dehydrating, grilling, and am starting to get a good season on my cast iron pans.

I absolutely love spending time in my kitchen experimenting with new recipes, adapting recipes, and making food to share with my partner, coworkers, and friends.

If you have any interesting cultural, seasonal, or regional recipes i'd love to hear more about them and even get the recipe to try at home. If want to talk cooking & baking, i'm you person!

I’ve been on a bread baking “kick” lately and my goal is to preserve a food from each season this year starting with spring (made this goal post “winter”, oops!). I also want to try my hand at mold ripened cheeses after I master a few more soft cheeses.

My favorite colors include: Purples - Blues - Indigo - Greens - Oranges I typically enjoy bright "happy" colors, jewel tones, and neutrals (so basically most colors, I know)

As for "themes" I love practically anything regarding birds, deer, space, plants, and nature. I also really enjoy vintage, art deco, art nouveau, retro, retro-futurism, industrial, minimalist, modern/contemporary, and "spooky", Gothic (but not "Goth"), and macabre themes.

  • birds, deer, wildlife - not super "childish" prints though
  • Mushrooms, plants
  • contemporary/modern florals
  • Minimalist geometric designs
  • Solids in bright, neutral, or jewel tone colors
  • I LOVE natural indigo textiles & dyes
  • Purple, purple, purple - especially plum, royal, and indigo
  • I don't like most Batik or tie dye fabric. Shibori dyeing is okay though!

  • For quilting swaps: 100% cotton textiles please

  • I especially like quilting prints from Cotton+Steel & Rifle Paper Co. I love Japanese quilting cotton.

  • I'm something of an aspiring quilter. I enjoy making "Modern" style quilts & textile art projects. I'm currently working on finished a hand quilted quilt and starting up the design of a new one! I've been quilting on and off for years, but I now have time to dedicate more time to quilted projects.

  • I really like big, bold colors for quilts with simple yet visually interesting blocks

I am a HUGE nerd and love to play a variety of board games, card games, role playing games, and video games.

I particularly enjoy these following games:

  • Dungeons & Dragons (i'm currently playing a goblin paladin!)
  • Gloomhaven
  • Lords of Waterdeep
  • Dominion
  • Coup
  • Betrayal at House on the Hill (esp. the Baldur's Gate re-skin)
  • Ticket to Ride
  • Stardew Valley (i'm in love with this game!)

Pokemon! Especially gen 1-3, but i'm working my way into gen 4-5.

I'm an avid Pokemon Go player (PM me for my trainer code!) and i'm currently playing Pokemon Let's Go: Eevee and Pokemon Ultra Sun

Anyone else hype for Sword & Shield!?

My favorite Pokemon are: Arcanine, Lugia, Suicune, Piplup, Emporeon, Lucario, Cubone, Ditto, Vaporeon, Dragonair, Bayleaf, Xatu, Eevee, Barboach, Mareep, Murkrow, Shuckle, Houndour, Stantler, Raikou, Torchic, Blaziken, Mightyena, Breloom, Wailord, Absol, Latias, Rayquaza

  • Queer positive stuff, especially non-binary, genderqueer & trans related materials
  • LGBTQ related materials
  • Queer Theory & Essays
  • Cryptoquip puzzles
  • Crossword puzzle books
  • I enjoy letterboxing and geocaching - but letterboxing is my favorite!
  • Interesting patches (sew on & iron on)

  • Medals, amulets, tokens, coins
  • Tarot cards, astrology, pagan, and witchcraft related items
  • Items related to hedge & cottage witchcraft

**Please make sure none of these items perpetuate cultural appropriation or are related to a closed culture/religion.

Although I genuinely love swapping and receiving mail, I do have a few things i'm not a fan of personally. So, to avoid hurt feelings on either end please avoid sending the following:

  • Mint-Chocolate and white chocolate flavored foods
  • Coconut and banana flavored foods
  • Scented items
  • Please, please, please - No MLM (multi-level marketing/pyramid scheme things such as Young Living, Lularoe, Rodan + Fields, Avon, Mary Kay, etc. I want nothing to do with these unethical companies and predatory business models.
  • Decaffinated tea or coffee
  • Dollar store/bin items
  • Adult coloring books, pages, postcards, etc.
  • Maps of cities, restaurant menus, brochures, etc. (unless it is relevant to the swap)
  • Not a huge fan of Hello Kitty and most "Kawaii" stuff, or anime
  • Please no die cut paper pieces or paper scraps, I have plenty at the moment!
  • Please no napkins, dollies, place mats, cupcake liners, etc.
  • I don't use foam and "3D" stickers or embellishments. Its fine if you send art using them, but I don't need any for my personal stash!
  • Please no paperclips, erasers, or planner supplies
  • No friendship books/sheets UNLESS its the type of swap I have signed up for
  • Please no cosmetics/make up, nail polish, lotions, or "beauty" products
  • No jewelry (neclaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, etc.)
  • I have no need for anything child related
  • NO Autism $peaks materials, i'm a fan of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN).
  • NOTHING with "G*psy" in/on it, it is a slur y'all!
  • No religious stuff please. I enjoy learning about interesting religious cultural traditions, mythology, history, and mysticism, but I don't want pamphlets, brochures, tracts, and the like. I'm happy with my personal life and beliefs :)
  • No "holiday" mascot related items (ex. santa & elves, "cartoony" snowmen, "cartoony" easter bunny, etc.)
  • I do however appreciate things with a more general seasonal theme such as mistletoe & holly, wreaths, snow, realistic rabbits, deer, cardinals, flowers & leaves, etc.

Other dislikes?

Patriotic stuff, fascists & nationalists, pro-military/pro-law enforcement/state-sanctioned violence & domestic terrorism (KKK, NRA, ALT-Right, MAGA, etc.), religious zealotry, cultural appropriation, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, TERFs, SWERFs, and RADFEMs, people who refuse to acknowledge their privilege, bigotry of all kinds, you know - the usual stuff.

Here I will keep ratings & ratings explanations that will be updated on a case-by-case basis.

2019: I am currently up to date in my archive here on SB (indicating that I have properly rated everyone & I have received swaps). Please contact me if you believe you are missing a rating from me on a swap.

Due to my schedule sometimes I don't get swaps dropped off in the mail until after the mail had been picked for the day (after 4:30 - 5pm in my area). Therefore, sometimes post marks will be inaccurate especially due to weekends or holidays or general USPS chaos. I have also noticed that a lot of mail I receive has been missing their postmarks/franking/cancellation marks as of 2019 so i'm not sure what is going on there

Mail service is generally very reliable for me where I live & work so let me know if something seems to have gone missing. I'm always happy to make it up to you and resend!

Please contact me about any ratings or swaps you have a question about via the swap-bot messenger system.

Comment: Yum! Looks delicious, can't wait to give it a try!
Response: They are super tasty fresh off the griddle so all the butter can melt into the bread, YUM! Let me know if you end up giving it a shot!
Lillypooh12 rated for OOO: Washi tape holder & samples on Apr 10, 2019
Comment: Your washi holder is adorable!!! Did you just use tape to cover it? I couldn't even tell until you told me you wish you had a laminator. Love the cactus washi! <3
Response: I'm so glad you like it, I had so much fun busting out the water colors again! I got away with only having to overlap two pieces of packaging tape per side making the overlapped edge barely visible. It was quite nerve wracking, but worth it! I'm glad you like the cactus washi, its one of my favorites!
Comment: What a delicious sounding recipe! It definitely sounds like one I want to try soon! Great pictures and descriptions too.
Response: I can't recommend it enough, its that good! I hope you give a try and let me know if you do!
Comment: This swap was such fun to take part in -- thank you for hosting it! And I absolutely love your loon. Beautifully done, and I very much like the effect of the white lines in the background. I'm looking forward to next month's swap!
Response: I'm so happy you like my loon! I don't think i've put that much time and effort into an Illustrator project since university, ha!
Fullsteampowell rated for International Women's Day PC on Mar 12, 2019
Comment: Sally Ride FTW!
Response: Glad the card made it to you, I love an excuse to break out the Sally Ride stamps! :)
hazelwitch3 rated for DAD: Magical Mystery Swap #1 on Mar 12, 2019
Comment: I love your Mr Universe! And I know what you mean about software updates -- I reckon they sometimes add as much as half the time again to a project. Great work and thanks for joining the swap.
Response: Thank you! I swear they never change anything except for how the work space is laid out! As soon as I start getting used to it it changes, ha!
aligurl75 rated for Kitchen Challenge Series: Roux on Mar 11, 2019
Comment: Thank you very much. This was a very interesting recipe. I've never heard of a dish like this and I'm thinking about trying it. (I'm very picky eater...hahahahaha) My husband definitely wants me to make this . :)
Response: I totally get you, I’m a rather picky eater myself! I certainly think it can be customized & it won’t suffer much from swapping some ingredients. I definitely recommend trying it if you have the chance, or if anything try it in a restaurant if possible before committing! Let me know if you make it!
stonekeepers rated for DAD: Magical Mystery Swap #1 on Mar 6, 2019
Comment: What a fantastic composition! I am envious of your skill. Thanks!
Response: Glad you liked it! I love playing around in photoshop again!
PrairieKittin rated for DAD: Magical Mystery Swap #1 on Mar 6, 2019
Comment: Very cool!! Thank you!!
Response: Thank you! <3
Comment: That’s really neat about Bill Gates! I should become your BFF...I LOVE cheese! Lol
Response: Glad the card got to you! I recently got some more renet for cheese, now I just need to get a few cultures & a nice empty afternoon!
karli rated for Fashion PC swap #4 on Mar 3, 2019
Comment: Very cool! Envious of your visit to the Met! Karolina
Response: Glad you liked the card! It is such a cool museum, I can't wait to visit again!
Comment: What a great response to the swap task! I very much enjoyed reading your account of the process and might well try the recipe myself one of these days. Thank you for hosting the swap -- such a good idea.
Response: Its a fun recipe to try if you don't mind being in the kitchen for about 1.5 hours. Its great if you need something warm & hearty, I hope you get the chance to try it out! I'm also glad you enjoyed the swap, I had so much fun! I look forward to hosting part two soon!
Comment: Haha, I love this postcard and your note, thanks bunches!! I want to visit the east coast someday, it looks gorgeous. So rare to find another VB fan, too, yay! I'm going to send you a friend request because I plan on starting a nerd/ pop culture group eventually, and you sound like a good fit if that's your style of entertainment. All the best! <3 Jessie
Response: I'm glad you liked the card! The East Coast is absolutely beautiful, I've really enjoyed my time out here. Lets keep in touch!
Comment: Thank you for the Japanese Curry recipe. I could definitely think to try this recipe if only I get the time some day. Do you think it would work with tofu as protein? I've never thought of storing roux to be used later, so that was a good tip too!
Response: I think an extra firm tofu added in the last 15 minutes or so would be great or fried "katsu" style. I think you would have even better luck with seitan for either frying or adding directly to the sauce like the chicken is in the original recipe.
Comment: Yes! You sent to me an excellent PC for the swap - misty - moody picture of a Black Cat in a mysterious setting. I like this PC as it reminds me of how I love to create ATCs, PCs, mail art for Halloween swaps using images of Black cats. This PC is inspiring, I'm saving it for my Halloween collection. I love cats but sadly I'm allergic to them. My sister bought me a large Disney Cat character as my "apt pet," I have large toy stuffed Disney "Cheshire Cat" in my bedroom.
Response: I'm so glad you liked the PC, its one of my favorites that i've found in a tiny stationary/gift shop I like. I hope it gives plenty of inspiration for Halloween, its never to early to get our spooky on!
Comment: Thank you for the sweet Valentine. And, thank you for reading my profile. Love the hand-drawn chicken with an umbrella. : ) Happy Valentine's day to you, too!
Response: I'm glad you liked the card! Happy Valentine's Day! :)
Comment: I love the card, it was so sweet especially the schnauzer you drew! Thank you.
Response: I'm glad you like the card! Happy Valentine's Day! :)
Comment: Thank you so much for the pretty card and nice note!
Response: I'm glad it made it to you, Happy Holidays! :)
Comment: Ooooh, a lot I don’t know. Very exciting! (Edit, Dec 2018) Just realized I commented but didn’t rate. How peculiarly rude of me!! My apologies Megan. :)
Response: I hope you found a fun new song! :)

Hi! Thanks for the profile comment! I LOVE the McElroys. It’d be cool to do a McElroy-related swap—although I can’t draw, so I’m trying to think of a swap I could do. 🙂

Hi, found your profile from the Share Your Playlist swap and just wanted to share that you profile gave me the giggles. I should have already heard of this, but maybe I’m just a bad bi. :)
